I just finished Part One, and once again I'm reminded why I love older literary fiction. The prose and psychological tension feel unlike almost anything I come across in newer thrillers, and I'm absolutely loving what the story has become.
Two things feel especially clear so far. Clegg is a madman, but what makes him so fascinating is the logic he uses to make his obsession seem reasonable. He idealizes Miranda for the qualities he associates with refinement and individuality, while seeming to believe that his own differences—his restraint, his gifts, and the fact that he considers himself different from an ordinary kidnapper—should make him worthy of the same kind of special consideration from her. Yet he does not truly love Miranda because he barely allows her to exist as a person outside the version of her he has collected in his head.
Her captivity becomes a kind of static cocoon for his fantasy. He enjoys the moments when she becomes compliant or dependent on him, even though that compliance exists only because he has taken away nearly every alternative she has. The contradiction is incredible: he wants credit for treating her “well” while expecting gratitude, affection, and eventually love from the person he imprisoned. That gap between how Clegg understands himself and what he is actually doing has been amazing and genuinely thought-provoking to read.
I ended up reading all of Part One in a single day. I plan on finishing the book soon and writing a full review afterward. So far, it's a 10/10 and an absolute must-read.
